Published in 1957, Voss is inspired by the real-life story of the German explorer Ludwig Leichhardt, who disappeared while attempting to cross Australia in the 1840s.
Patrick White, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1973, based the titular character Voss partly on himself and his perceptions of being an outsider in his adopted country of Australia.
