Killian watches all the footage of Glyndon from the hunt but isn’t sure who invited her to join. He’s also uncertain about an arrow that nearly grazed him during the hunt and can’t see who shot it on any of the cameras. In a class the next morning, he receives a text from his mother and thinks about the time he heard his father say he was defective and that they should have only had Gareth. Afterward, he goes to the REU campus, where he sees Glyndon sitting with another man. Killian sits beside her, claiming he’s her boyfriend and scaring the other man away. Glyndon is outraged but calms down when she sees that Killian prepared her a healthy lunch after rightly guessing that she wasn’t taking care of herself physically. Killian insists that they see each other that night since they’re dating and gives Glyndon the choice of a quiet night at home or a party Nikolai is throwing.

Chapter 20 Summary: “Glyndon”

Glyndon confronts Cecily about what she heard her say to Brandon when she thought she was dreaming. Cecily reveals that after Devlin’s death, she found a canvas with the words, “Why are you still breathing, Glyndon?” (218) written in red paint on their doorstep, leading Glyndon to wonder if she’s in more trouble than she thought. Glyndon decides to go to Nikolai’s party later, thinking it may be a way to get information about Devlin’s mysterious death, but she doesn’t tell Killian. Glyndon sees Gareth at the party and follows him upstairs, where she confronts him and offers a bargain: She’ll help Gareth with Killian in any way he wants if he helps her figure out what happened to Devlin, whom Gareth admits he knew personally. Gareth says he’ll use Glyndon as a weapon against Killian and kisses her before Killian quickly rips his brother off her.

Chapter 21 Summary: “Glyndon”

Glyndon is shocked to see the fight between the brothers and notices that Gareth purposely provoked Killian to confront him about how he fakes his facade for his family. Glyndon is scared and runs, knowing she should have never gotten between the two, but Killian grabs her and pulls her into his bedroom. He’s angry, but she’s aroused and can’t think of anything but him as he pursues her. When he forces himself on her, she feels relief and admits that she wants him to hurt her.

Chapter 22 Summary: “Killian”

Killian watches Glyndon as she sleeps the next morning, reveling in the blood and bruises he left on her. He knows he nearly lost control with Glyndon and could have easily choked her to death, but he was shocked by her tenderness toward him. He knows she’s trying to distance herself from him when she wakes up, and he tries to get her to admit that she wanted him to assault her the first time they met. She asks him if he would have stopped if she had asked him the night before, but he doesn’t give her an affirmative answer.

Chapter 23 Summary: “Glyndon”

Glyndon sneaks out of Killian’s bedroom in the middle of the night and overhears Jeremy and Gareth talking about something secretive. Killian quickly finds her and carries her back upstairs, threatening to tie her to him.

Chapter 24 Summary: “Glyndon”

Killian tries to convince Glyndon to skip her classes and spend the day in bed with him, but he ultimately brings her breakfast in bed and drives her back to her dorm. On the way, they discuss how Killian pretends to be someone he’s not to the outside world; he argues that it’s how he can best get by in life. Contrarily, Glyndon always wants to know the full truth behind everything, and hearing this makes Killian admit that he still doesn’t know exactly what he wants from her. When Glyndon gets home, her friends are waiting for her, worried about where she was. They show her a picture Killian posted on his Instagram of them together with a caption possessively claiming that Glyndon is “off-limits.” Glyndon is tagged in the photo, and she gets a text from Landon threatening to kill Killian if she gets anywhere near him again.

Chapter 25 Summary: “Killian”

When Killian returns to his car after his classes, he finds Landon and Brandon leaning against it. They’ve come to threaten him to stay away from Glyndon, but Killian argues that she wants to be with him. He tries to get on Brandon’s good side by revealing what he knows about the King family dynamics, and it seems to work. When Killian’s cousin Mia appears and invites all but Landon—who has keyed Killian’s car—to lunch, Brandon goes too. Landon gives Killian a week to stop seeing Glyndon and ominously threatens him.

Chapter 26 Summary: “Glyndon”

Glyndon hears people talking about her behind her back all day, and her friends question her about her relationship with Killian. Killian texts her a picture with Brandon to make her nervous, so she drives to his highly guarded mansion and, surprisingly, is let in. Glyndon is terrified for her brother, but when she gets to the mansion she sees Brandon, Killian, and Mia having fun playing video games. When Glyndon goes to hide in the bathroom, Killian follows her to force her to have sex. He tries to get Glyndon to admit that she belongs to him, but Glyndon refuses, knowing it’s the one piece of herself she still has.

Chapters 19-26 Analysis

The Truth Behind the Facade is integral to this set of chapters, and this theme receives particular emphasis in Glyndon and Killian’s conversation in Chapter 24. Glyndon isn’t surprised that Killian admits he hides his true self from the world and only acts as the likable person others assume he is, but she’s surprised to learn that she’s the only one he feels okay being himself with. While Killian thinks this is the only way to get by, especially for people like him, Glyndon favors knowing the full truth at all times. Ironically, when Killian does tell her the truth about why he’s interested in her, Glyndon is hurt, and Killian tells her “I could’ve lied to you, but I didn’t […] Do you want me to lie to you? Do you want me to wear a mask around you, pretend to be someone who’ll be accepted by your pretty little morals, is that it, Glyndon?” (267). This conversation not only highlights the dysfunction in their relationship but reveals some of the ugly truths Glyndon must learn to deal with if she wants to be with Killian. In addition, Glyndon and Killian’s argument foreshadows how the two later keep secrets from one another that they must eventually reveal to one another.

The more Killian gets to know Glyndon, the more he heightens his control over her, doing more to claim her as his own and deny her a say in the matter. In Chapter 19, Killian insists that he’s Glyndon’s boyfriend—something they never discussed—and threatens a male classmate Glyndon is talking to because he’s jealous. When Gareth kisses Glyndon to get a rise out of his brother, it works: Killian beats him. Similarly, when his friends start to flirt with Glyndon in Chapter 23, not only does Killian forcibly restrain her and carry her back to his bedroom, but he tells his friends, “She’s mine and, therefore, off-limits” (259). Killian echoes this statement when he posts a picture of the incident to his public Instagram account, tagging Glyndon without her consent, just like all his other actions. He undermines her autonomy in many of their interactions here and throughout the novel, punishing her when she doesn’t readily submit to his will.

However, Glyndon tries to preserve her autonomy in these chapters. After Killian corners her in a bathroom to have sex in Chapter 26, she refuses to follow his orders when he tells her to tell him that she belongs to him. Glyndon won’t say this, not only because she’s still unsure of Killian but also because she thinks, “This is the last part I have of myself, and I vehemently refuse to hand it over” (290). Though she suggests that she’s lying about not being his in the following lines, Glyndon knows she’d have no hope of getting rid of Killian if she admitted this. She still keeps secrets from him, especially that she’s working with Gareth and thus against Killian. Simultaneously, Killian tries to deny her autonomy, and her brothers don’t even question her about her thoughts on the relationship before confronting him. Though Glyndon is still very much under Killian’s control, in these chapters she makes an effort to stay strong and not let all of herself go.
